City Building & Construction: Keeping Coles Drysdale Trading While Delivering a 4,100m² Car Park Transformation

Project Description

The Coles Drysdale car park resurfacing project involved the resurfacing of approximately 4,100m² of existing asphalt to improve safety, accessibility and the overall customer experience. Delivered in an active retail environment, the works included pavement reconstruction, asphalt resurfacing, line marking and car park reinstatement, providing a durable and refreshed asset for the store.

Our Approach

To ensure business continuity and maintain customer access, the project was delivered in two carefully planned stages, with only half of the car park closed at any time. This approach-maintained vehicle capacity while allowing construction activities to progress safely and efficiently.

Given the busy Coles supermarket and retail setting, site management and traffic control were critical. The work zones were fully secured throughout the project, with clear pedestrian pathways maintained at all times to ensure customers could safely access both stores. Ongoing communication with the Coles store team and stakeholders ensured smooth coordination and minimal disruption to daily operations.

Key Challenges

Undertaking major resurfacing works within an active retail precinct presented several challenges:

  • Maintaining customer, team member and delivery access throughout construction.
  • Managing vehicle and pedestrian movements in a high-traffic environment.
  • Coordinating works adjacent to neighbouring retail businesses.
  • Delivering the project safely while keeping the car park operational.
  • Completing the works ahead of the busy Christmas trading period.

Outcome

The project was successfully delivered, enabling Coles to remain fully operational throughout construction. The staged delivery approach minimised disruption to customers and retailers while significantly improving the functionality, safety and appearance of the car park.

The project also received positive feedback from Coles’ National maintenance manager Justin Simpson, recognising both the quality of the works and the site team’s professionalism:

“City Building & Construction communicated the plan well with the store team.”
“The Coles Regional Manager mentioned they were happy to see the contractors help our customers with assisting them and their trolleys back to their cars.”

This feedback reflects our commitment to delivering quality construction outcomes and to creating a positive experience for customers and stakeholders throughout the life of the project.
